CAN’T FIND MY PURPOSE: I am continuously lost, frustrated, confused, and seemingly directionless in my search for what I want to do with my life. I have many interests, but also many doubts about my abilities, and have trouble committing to long term college-type training (especially because of the financial burden, but also because I feel I could complete the coursework in half of the time). Through having five different college majors over four years (but no degree), various jobs, and through counseling and journaling, I have learned that I highly dislike schedules and corporate environments, that I love movement-oriented activities like yoga, muay thai, and tai chi, that I find much comfort in expressing myself creatively (music, art, dance, acting, writing, etc.) — but not much satisfaction in it because it doesn’t feel like I’m contributing to anything, and that I constantly find myself wanting to somehow heal the world (especially in an emotional and spiritual manner, but also in a physical manner since it all ties together). I feel pulled in many directions at once and also simultaneously (as a result I suppose) like I have no direction at all. What is your take on my struggle of finding direction, and do you have any suggestions of what I could maybe do to find some answers?

Dear Purpose,

First of all, take a deep breath and relax. All is as it is meant to be. Your struggle to find a direction in life was predictable from the time you were born, just by looking at your birth chart.

Finding direction is eventually a necessary part of everyone’s journey, but who told you it had to happen by any particular age? (I’m suspecting your father, with Saturn conjoining your Sun and opposing Chiron.) The truth is that everyone has their own unique journey with its own unique timing. For you, finding direction was scheduled to happen later than most people.

It turns out that the very process of “finding a direction” is a key component to the karmic lessons you are here to learn in this lifetime. Your North Node is in Sagittarius. This is your soul direction, and implies that your past life pattern was in Gemini. In those lives, you spent much time in the company of others, pursuing diverse and scattered intellectual activities, strengthening your ability to take in knowledge, process thoughts and communicate with others, seeing all points of view in all matters. After many such lives, you grew out of balance with the ability to find and assert your own truth, truth from within.

All of us, when we are born, subconsciously expect to repeat our past life patterns as our strategy toward life fulfillment, however we design our lives in ways that prevent that from happening so that we will stretch in a new direction. So you see, Purpose, this very early part of your life has expressed as your past life familiarity in being a student, an intellect. But now you are beginning to notice how that path, though it comes easy to you, does not feel fulfilling. It’s not meant to.

In this lifetime, your soul is wanting to search for truth and wisdom, not just facts and knowledge. It’s about understanding the big picture, connecting the dots in ways that give meaning to life. Philosophy, religion, spirituality, metaphysics and the occult are the “stuff” of fulfillment for you. However, approaching these subjects in a formal academic setting is probably not going to cut it for you. Typical academia can suffocate the life from these otherwise intuitive and inspiring explorations that hold the promise of inspiration, vitality and creativity. A more promising platform for you is in the realm of personal vulnerability and intimacy in relationships. Your North Node in the 8th house challenges you to be less self-contained and to learn to merge your energy with an other, creating interdependence and soulful synergy. It’s a surrendering of the ego to higher self, to the soul’s will.

Your 10th house of career hold Uranus and Neptune. This alone indicates that you need a great amount of freedom in your career path, freedom to be eccentric and follow your intuitive urgings. When we add your Sun, Mercury and Saturn in Aquarius in the 11th house, this amplifies your tendencies to think and act outside the comforms of societal norms. Of course you don’t like corporate environments with tight schedules. On the other hand, if you can find the right groups and friends, you’ll feel very much at home in collective energy. But to make that work to your favor, you need to learn how to give your self plenty of alone time, spend time out in nature, listen to your inner voice more, and learn how to speak your personal truth. This lifetime is about growing your intuitive abilities, formulating your own personal belief system, and patiently listening for inner guidance. Far too much time has been spent saying what you think others want to hear and trusting their perceptions instead of your own. No wonder you haven’t found your direction. You’ve been looking in the wrong direction.

More clues to what might be a fulfilling direction for you? Your Chiron in Leo in the 5th house indicates that as a child, your creative, playful expression was repressed by those around you (again, I’m suspecting strict father). Much of your healing path from that has been by embracing your creative urges through art and performance. This is how your soul has directed you away from repeating merely intellectual strengths from past life and toward the emotional experiences of inspiration that guide you to your intuitive discoveries of meaning and wisdom. Mars in your 3rd house reflects the need, in this lifetime, for you to redirect your mental curiosity toward physical applications that keep you down in your lower body more. Thus, yoga, dancing and the like are very appropriate.

So, by now you get the drift of what I’m saying here. Stop measuring the success of your life in terms of college degrees and career goals and appreciate that you, more than most people, are allowed to explore more, adventure more, and then discover what truly inspires your creative passion. Trust your inner voice and your spiritual guides, Purpose. you are destined to find direction…and then change it…if you want.
