Nathaniel Reid Bakery in Kirkwood: Serving World-Class Pastries Locally

 In Feature, Food

Don’t let this venue‘s unassuming storefront in a strip mall on Manchester Road fool you. Nathaniel Reid is an award-winning culinary entrepreneur and one of the top pastry chefs in America. These are seriously world-class pastries and desserts. Reid, a Missouri native, honed his craft in kitchens and schools around the country and in France. His bakery opened to foodie fan fare in 2016—and it didn’t disappoint.

You can find savory options at the bakery in the short list of sandwiches, salads and quiche. Or enjoy breakfast pastries like croissants, danishes and the layered dough-and-sugar combination of the kouign-amann (pronounced QUEEN-ah-mahn). The tiny café space isn’t conducive to lingering over a meal, so most customers take their haul to go. And this works out perfectly for the bakery, because what hungry person can order breakfast or lunch without adding on something sweet? It could a cookie or delicate pastry; it could be a chocolate, a poundcake, or one of the macrons, with flavors like salted caramel, poppy flower, almond-orange and espresso.

The shop offers occasional cooking classes where they demystify a dessert so home cooks can give it a whirl. Whether or not you perfect the pastry technique, it will give you a new appreciation of Reid’s talent and dedication to quality.
