Spring 2012 Runway Report
The season's top trends for him and her signify fashion at its most inspiring.

A girly mood rings in the new season, as designers reveal soft spots for pastels, pansies and pretty lace.
A drastic departure from their high-contrast pairings and psychedelic prints for fall, designers decided to go pastel for spring—offering up countless servings of sorbet-hued separates and Easter-perfect frocks in subtle pink, purple and mint. Among the many who embraced the light this season were Philip Lim, whose color-blocked offerings begged references to Neapolitan ice cream, and Calvin Klein, whose melt-worthy slipdresses were clear standouts among the season's many palette cleansers. Confections, you have our attention.

This season, everything is coming up roses (and daffodils, daisies and lilacs) as designers reveal a shared mindset that seems stemmed from flowery fields. Together, their shows read like a garden party, with a number of head-to-toe prints proclaiming “the more, the merrier”—and, at last, the return of flower power. Among the most memorable pieces plucked from designers' garden varieties were a playful pinafore at Christopher Kane, combat-boots-turnedflower- pots at Ashish and a rose-embellished skirt at Prada that oh-so-perfectly read like icing on a cake.

THE HOLE SHEBANG
Although typically reserved for lingerie, wedding gowns and lingerie-as-wedding-gown styles (think Madonna performing “Like a Virgin”), lace is having a major moment in ready-to-wear. In fact, Chantilly has never been so chic. Woven into an overwhelming
number of collections by way of sheer evening gowns (at Erdem and Badgley Mischka) and delicate day dresses (at Louis Vuitton), the holey look is hot for any occasion—and is surprisingly easy to wear. Simply pick up a prim skirt with dainty mesh trim, or think “doily” when deciding on your next statement dress—and be prepared to hit the lingerie department. Regardless of what the pop stars are doing, you'll want to wear panties.

Minimalism takes a backseat this season, marking a sartorial transition—from less to more.
Hailed a comeback in fall, once dormant double-breasted jackets saturated the spring runways like never before. Apparently sold on the fact that the style can skew as informal as any, influential designers from New York to Milan introduced an abundance of blazers with rows of parallel buttons—for work and play, and in new proportions. The most lightweight and comfortable of all options (to those who fear change, anyway) were part of suits by Band of Outsiders and Salvatore Ferragamo. But, then there was Corneliani's bright white rendition, which should definitely be reserved for those ready to handle a double-take.

BLACK LIGHT SPECIAL
When it comes to what to wear this spring, man up and don't shy away from color—because among designers' brightest ideas for the season are neon takes on your go-to staples. At Gant by Michael Bastian, the trend played out by way of a fluorescent polo and a plaid DayGlo blazer—shown paired together, which made for a bold, preppy look not likened since the '80s. On the same page were Louis Vuitton's electric scarves and Marc by Marc Jacobs' candy-colored suits (shown in green, orange and hot pink), both of which teetered between appropriate dress for a country club and a rave. It seems, this
season, it's go loud or go home.
