The Scoop: Goodwill Outlet

shopping_300x400
There’s a good chance you’ve seen the billboards, or have driven by the old Macy’s warehouse and noticed that it’s plastered with a new label. If you’re a thrift fiend like me, you’ve undoubtedly been curious. A Goodwill Outlet? What in the world…? The signs have offered a bit of scoop, including the fact that the store will open May 5—and a “Buy the Bag” tagline suggests that its prices will be pound-based. While I’ve never shopped such a store, I know others who have claimed to partake in such merriment. They weren’t messing with me? This is blowing… more …

In Store: Urban Turban at Klutch

olsen
Seen on the a number of Spring 2011 runways—including Milly, Issa, Vena Cava and Jason Wu—the turban is a must-have accessory this season. Available in various versions, from headband-like bands to more-substantial styles that fit like a cap, it’s my favorite of designers’ many recent attempts to bring back hair accoutrements of decades past; I’ll take a ’70s turban over an ’80s scrunchie any day…

I was recently disappointed—though not surprised—to find that Klutch in Town & Country (636.220.6110) is down to just one style in their just-picked-up Urban Turban line, which starts at around $40. Though I’ve been… more …

Gimme More: New Shoe Lines at Paperdolls

ShoeHeaven
Many would argue that a girl can never have too many shoes; I am one of those people. They pretty-up your closet, they pretty-up your feet and buying them ignites something many have deemed a “shoegasm”. In a nutshell, few things are better. So, when Carolyn Burghoff, owner of newly-expanded Paperdolls Boutique in Kirkwood, informed me that her store is now housing funky Naughty Monkey and boho-girly Plenty by Tracy Reese footwear (both personal faves), and that Big Buddha‘s line of shoes (which is apparently as chic and affordable as the brand’s killer handbags) is expected to arrive pre-fall,… more …

The worst that could happen? You don’t get selected. The best? You’ll FINALLY get to show off the runway-worthy designs you’ve been crafting in your make-shift studio since the first time you turned on your TV and heard the words “auf wiedersehen”.

The team behind the 2nd Annual INSPIRE: Fashion Show Celebrating Diversity is currently accepting clothing and accessories designers’ applications for their September 30 event, held at the Chase Park Plaza. Guest Editor: Katelyn Gelber- Co-Founder, KM2 Shoes

chan Luu #2
If you shop the local boutiques, you’ve seen her work all around town; one of the three young sisters-slash-brilliant entrepreneurs behind successful footwear brand KM2 Shoes, Katelyn Gelber knows a thing or two about fashion. Along with Megan and Mattison, she has created a to-die collection of primarily-peep-toe heels in styles perfect for every fashion fiend, from retro lovers to rocker chicks (check out the Jill!). Between her regular bouncing back and forth from LA to St. Louis, I caught up with the petite powerhouse to talk what she’ll be working this spring—which includes statement shoes (of course), beauty essentials… more …

Interview: “The Diamond Guy” John Baird of Blue Nile

Round Diamond Studs
Just in time for ALIVE’s Diamond Stud Earrings Giveaway (winner announced April 1; details on how to enter below interview), I caught up with the man who made our most glam giveaway to date possible: Blue Nile‘s “Diamond Guy”, John Baird. Undoubtedly an expert, he dished the goods on what Natalie Portman is wearing on the red carpet, how to score Kate Middleton’s coveted engagement ring for less and at what stage in the relationship jewelry should be gifted. His advice, in a nutshell? Every stage. Men, take notes…

The Real Scoop on Splash

erin1
When a coworker put a bug in my ear late last week that Splash—my personal go-to for swimwear, menswear, denim and flirty, trendy things—was closing, I was a bit skeptical. Really?! It seemed there had always been a steady stream of shoppers (I’ve been known to refer to it as “the private school girl hangout”), and I had never heard about any “issues” (I talk to shopboy Serge more than my family; he would have told me…). Luckily, a chance meeting (I don’t know how “chance”, as it was outside of his Saint Louis Galleria store) with owner Kyrle Boldt… more …

Guest Editor: Mia Brown-Davis- Owner, Eve’s Apple Vintage

whitetee3
Launching this week is my “Guest Editor” feature, a weekly post that will highlight the latest loves of my favorite fashion peeps. First up? Eve’s Apple Vintage (1136 Washington Ave., Downtown, 314.540.8953) owner Mia Brown-Davis. I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather see invade my territory than a vintage nut who shares my appreciation for bustiers, sequins and decades-old concert tees (her collection puts mine to shame). The petite, oft-red-lipsticked fashion plate behind STL’s best vintage sales (a Missoni sweater for $10? Done.) and killer ‘80s everything (Eve’s Apple houses clothing and accessories from the ‘60s to the ‘90s; I’m… more …
