Season 9 & “Project Runway All Stars” Season 2

Your “Project Runway” experience in 75 words or less. The “Project Runway” experience was one of the hardest and most rewarding challenges I have faced in my entire life. It made me not only a stronger designer but a stronger individual as well. It gave me a platform to the world that I would never get anywhere else. I made several life-long friends and, of course, met people I will never speak to again. When asked if I would do it again, my respone: “Without hesitation.”
Where has your career gone since “Project Runway?” Since “Project Runway,” my career has blossomed. The show experience helped me further establish who my customer is and further reinforce who I am designing for. It also helped me grow tremendously as a designer and find what my true aesthetics are in design.
Describe your design aesthetic. The Anthony Ryan brand embodies classic silhouettes with a simple yet futuristic approach. Using bold fabric choices, simplistic yet strong lines and smart color options, the brand strives to bring a “new classic” to the fashion industry.
What makes your style stand out from the rest? My designs stand out from the rest based solely on the graphic and artistic nature in my work.
What/who inspires you? I am driven and inspired by fabric or a story that I want the collection to tell. The story usually comes after.
What are you working on currently? I am currently working on my spring/summer 2014 collection, as well as a capsule collection for Nine West to be released next year. I will also be attending London, Milan, Tokyo and Berlin fashion weeks this year and am currently a guest editor for Marie Claire. I also just overcame a second diagnosis of testicular cancer so I am striving to move forward and get this train back on track.
Where is your line headed next? The next step for my line is sourcing production in China so that I may bring fashion to individuals of all financial backgrounds. You shouldn’t have to have tons of money to love and own high fashion.
When you hit a creative block, what do you do to get the juices flowing? Smoke pot and go fabric shopping.
Your favorite look for going out. Jeans, a t-shirt and kicks.
Your favorite look for staying in. My underwear.
Fashion trend you’re sick of. Halter tops.
Whose fall lines do you find most exciting? All the “Project Runway” designers showing at Saint Louis Fashion Week, including mine!
The one accessory every woman needs right now. A great alligator clutch in grey.
The one accessory every man needs right now. Leather suspenders.
Give us your trend forecast for 2014. This is something Joshua McKinley and I both share the same response to: “I honestly don’t keep up too much with forecasting because I don’t want it to influence my design subconsciously.”
What do you do when you’re not designing? I am a movie buff! I also love my dogs and a good cocktail when I’m not working.
Something people would be surprised to know about you. I come from a town of about 300 people.
What’s in your fridge right now? Fish, turkey sausage, Powerade, broccoli, green beans, Activia and cajun turkey. I am on a health kick this month.
What books are on your nightstand? “Revenge Wears Prada” and the Vogue Collections magazine.
Your favorite piece in your closet right now. My Obey leopard printed hat until my hair grows back.
What are you looking forward to most about your time in St. Louis? I am very excited to catch up with my fellow designers and explore the city for the first time!
