Thirsty Thursday: Strawberry Shortcake by Steve Buncher

Strawberry Shortcake

Check back each week as we challenge a new St. Louis bartender extraordinaire to come up with a drink that fits our monthly Thirsty Thursday theme. They’re pulling out all the stops, armed with their most inventive tricks, fresh-squeezed juices, superior liquors and house-made infusions. Their creations are sure to keep your taste buds guessing.

The Bartender:
Steve Buncher

The Bar:
Helen Fitzgerald’s, 3650 S Lindbergh, Sunset Hills

The Challenge:
In the spirit of our August Work Issue, we challenge bartenders to concoct the perfect after-work drink.

The Drink:
Strawberry Shortcake

1 1/2 oz cake vodka
1/2 oz vanilla vodka
1 oz strawberry daiquiri
splash of sour
splash of white soda
lemon garnish

Steve Bucher took a totally different approach to our “after work” theme this week, serving up a sweet and creamy pink concoction that would satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth—the Strawberry Shortcake. But don’t let the color or name drive you away. We thought this fruity drink carried a perfect punch to wipe away all the stress from a hard day’s work. And, if you happen to have had a pretty nice day, this cocktail’s sweet disposition is just the icing on the shortcake!

What’s your favorite drink?
Vodka with sugar-free Red Bull—I work nights.

What’s the weirdest request you’ve gotten?
To stand on the bar and pour shots into women’s mouths. It primarily happens with bachelorette parties.

Someone orders ________ and you automatically know they have no idea what they’re talking about.
When someone just walks up and says, “Give me a beer.” They generally don’t know what they want and with so many different kinds, how am I supposed to know what to give them?
