I Scream for Gelato

The gelato counter
Gelato has it rough. It’s not the classic, cool American treat; it doesn’t have the same appeal for most as a bowl of  rocky road and kids don’t hit the ground running when they hear the “gelato” man driving down the block. St. Louis has always been an ice cream or frozen custard town—but if you ask me where I’m going for dessert or where I go for a break from the summer heat, it’s most often Gelateria Tavolini.

I don’t consider myself anti-ice cream—I like a good ole’ milkshake or scoop of chocolate ice cream as much as the next… more …

British Accents

If I had to guess, I would say that my aversion to brown accessories started at around the end of high school; whether it was an unyielding love for all things black that initially caused me to snub the fellow neutral, or whether there was a direct correlation to my wearing a chocolate-colored sundress with matching mega-platforms to a party junior year and, consequently, being called Poopy Spice for a week, I’m not quite sure…

Whatever the case, I had been loyal to black for years—that is, until I discovered the Bayswater Handbag in Darwin Leather, and decided that… more …

Baseball & Bites

The patio at The Over/Under
I’m a baseball fan to the core. Baseball season is my favorite time of the year. For me, it means walking to my gym, laying poolside while reading my latest obsession, and 160-plus days of game watching. And there’s nothing I love to do more during a St. Louis summer—besides actually attending a game—than to enjoy dinner while watching a Cards game.

St. Louis has an endless number of bars and restaurants to game watch, but one I’ve become fond of  is The Over/Under Sports Bar on Washington Avenue Downtown. The biggest draw—the 120-inch projector that plays the game on their… more …

The Yoga Web Grows

2008_kung_fu_panda_002-150x150
Last week Susan Talve introduced me to Andy from Art of Living with the hopes we would be able to swap Yoga information with each other. Andy gave me a quick overview of what Art of Living is – yoga that is focused on empowerment, breathing and meditation and told me to join a free Thursday class. Breathing, empowerment and free spoke to me so this past Thursday I went. I arrived a few minutes late (not shocking to my near and dear) and slipped into the basement of a Methodist Church in Maplewood with 2 other women who said… more …

American Woman

I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic and oh-so patriotic at the start of every summer, when Flag Day rolls around. It brings back childhood memories of my mother, ever festive and thoughtful, plastering our home and yard with flag banners, a large flag on a pole and mini-flags on sticks. Falling on the same day as my brother’s birthday, the red-white-and-blue mishmash replaced the more traditional abundance of balloons and streamers she typically used as decorations when my birthday, and my sister’s, rolled around; June 14 was a double celebration—though the mass of flags made repeat appearances… more …

Funny, fantastic Footage

After the Storytelling Festival I started thinking a lot about storytelling and the role it has played in our communities, cultures and religions. I began to recognize the power of teaching through parables instead of bullet points and the different art forms that are methods of storytelling, preserving our stories for future generations to learn from. When I saw a flyer saying that Channel 9 was offering a Digital Storytelling class I had to go. The class was perfect – flexible, tolerant of tardiness and absences and plenty of kind, knowledgeable instructors (all of who were male, hmm…). It was… more …

Connecting to Krishna

Krishna building
Last week I was on my way home from a digital editing class when I stumbled upon Govinda’s.

Well stumbled upon is the wrong way to say it…I walked past this building (what I thought was just a restaurant) and decided that I would see if they served dinner. When I ducked my head in I was greeted by Akhil, a kind, mild mannered man from Calcutta, India. He smiled widely as he cracked open the door to see what I needed. “Hello,” I said, “are you serving dinner tonight?” He nodded his head as he said, “No, we only… more …

Panama!

I have long proclaimed that I am not a hat person (my co-workers no longer say “huge”, instead favoring “the size of Jill’s head”; I’d rather not draw attention), but—some days—you’ve just gotta go there. So much to do, so little time…

Throughout the winter, my “hat days” meant donning a Marc by Marc Jacobs military-inspired topper I bought during a shopping weekend in Chicago with my sis. Cute, but it always made me feel a wee bit “Sarah Connor”. Wool-lined and black, it’s definitely not a warm-weather cap. For summer, I’m changing things up.

A classic look that’s… more …

Small Victories While Volunteering

Last week I went with CRC to volunteer at the Juvenile Detention Center in East St. Louis. The objective of the program was to sit with one of the teenage boys and help him prepare for applying for their first job. The night of the program myself and a friend walked through the dim lit, locked down, sad government building and prepared ourselves to meet a child who was being held at the detention center most likely for a violent crime. When the boys came out they whispered and looked up shyly just as you would expect from any teenage… more …
