Jeans Addiction

MKJimi
It’s not often I get so super-excited about a new line, I hound a boutique owner with “Is it in yet?” calls on a bi-weekly basis—but, then again, never before have I equated my wearing jeans of any kind with a match made in heaven. Textile Elizabeth and James denim will be mine; it’s meant to be…

The latest venture by mini-moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (two of my top style icons, who—in my opinion—have yet to do wrong in the realm of fashion), ’70s-inspired Textile recently launched with three styles: the Jimi—named after Hendrix, natch—is a boot-cut style… more …

Style Icon: Daisy Duke

Daisy1
I have a hunch that my love affair with Daisy Dukes started when I was a wee little girl. I constantly fought with my older brother about what we were going to watch on TV; I always wanted to watch “Today’s Special”, he always wanted to watch “The Dukes of Hazzard”. We eventually took turns, but—as time went on—I started to tire of Muffy and realize that everything about Catherine Bach’s character, Daisy (including her clothing), was awesome. I blame Jason…

Though never conscious of my likely inspiration, I spent hours throughout grade school making-over my jeans until they… more …

Treasure Trove, USA

FrejaCape
Whenever I get a chance to vintage shop for myself, which isn’t often, I get the urge to quote Tootie in Meet Me St. Louis. Out loud. Like a crazy person. “Wasn’t I lucky to be born in my favorite city?”

The fact of the matter is, St. Louis has some killer vintage clothing stores. Prior to my speech at the recent Green Ball on how to dress both fashionably and earth-friendly, tag owner Laney Stout was sweet enough to give me a lesson on the difference between “vintage” and “thrift”; to be truly “vintage”, clothing must be at least… more …

It’s Not a Bag, It’s a Birkin

Birkin2
While many know of the Birkin bag—the costly, coveted, worth-the-waitlist leather handbag designed by Jean-Louis Dumas for Hermes in 1984—most are not as familiar with the woman for which the bag was named. I, on the other hand, have counted Jane Birkin—the sexy, uninhibited singer and actress who emerged onto the Swinging London scene in the late ’60s—my style icon for years.

So, it was no surprise when—on a recent shopping trip to Vie (Ladue, 314.997.0124)—I recognized a Jen’s Pirate Booty crocheted dress as being inspired by something Jane Birkin once donned (and was photographed wearing, while with Serge Gainsbourg),… more …

Fallon Love

Fallon1
It wasn’t until a recent visit to a vintage store that I realized I was in desperate need of some new, edgy jewelry. Though the “dagger pendant” I asked the worker to pull out from the case turned out to be an antique letter opener, I decided to put a thin chain through one end and wear it anyway. It was tough; it was different; I was grasping.

But, then I found Fallon. Hardware-heavy and consistently cutting-edge, the line is composed of gunmetal chain mail, antiqued brass spikes and gold-plated daggers—aka, a few of my favorite things.

As it is… more …

The New Legwarmers

Dekkorii1
When I was young, I had somewhat of an obsession with legwarmers. Not only would I wear them to ballet class, but I’d wear them to school—with an oversized sweatshirt, leggings and Reebok high-tops. Blame the ’80s, or Jennifer Beals.

For whatever reason (they didn’t pair well with jellies?), my staple accessory soon changed (though the order is fuzzy, scrunchies, tee ties and charm necklaces had their times to shine)—but, legwarmers have never lost their special place in my heart. And, luckily, it seems others share my sentiment.

On a recent visit to Cha Boutique (9666 Clayton Rd., Ladue, 314.993.8080),… more …

Happy Endings

confetti
When it comes to desserts, I have two very important rules; keep it simple and satisfy me. For me, dessert isn’t a guilty pleasure or indulgence—it’s an innate component of any meal. It’s the best part, maybe that’s why it’s saved for last. A foodie’s happy ending. Dessert should tease you with just the right amount of taste to leave you fulfilled. It should satisfy with flavor, not size. A gargantuan piece of chocolate cake may look like it’s going to be good but won’t make you swoon if the chocolate isn’t sweet enough and the cake is dry and… more …

Slice me up some Storytelling

leeny-del-seamonds-small-150x150
I have decided that I am adding professional Storyteller to my long list of life goals. This new revelation came about after I went to Missouri Botanical with my Mom to see Leeny Del Seamonds a Master Storyteller perform several bi-lingual stories, one about a family using teamwork to pull an extra large vegetable out of the ground (you had to be there) and another about a Persian prince (Despite my history with them I loved this one) as a part of last weeks St. Louis Storytelling Festival.

As my Mother and I entered the theater we quickly realized that… more …
