Where Are You Dining?

Every April, there’s one day when this question is asked almost as much as “where you went to high school?” And it’s a question that you’re more likely to get a smile and response than a roll of the eyes. Where are you dining…as in, where are you Dining Out for Life?, an international “event” that raises money to help the fight against AIDS and locally, Saint Louis Effort for AIDS, an organization that provides education on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and comprehensive support services for those affected by the disease. There’s no tickets to buy or auction items to… more …

Dunham Dance Party

leslie2-150x150
Friday night was the best night of my life…well, almost. I went to a Katherine Dunham dance class at City Studio in the Central West End and was blown away by the instructor Leslie who gracefully shimmied across the dance floor showing the class a fusion of African and European moves that she’s been studying for almost a decade. I first fell in love with Katherine Dunham and her humanitarian work when I saw her exhibit at the History Museum. Her story of love, compassion and determination seemed to pull me in and wrap its arms around me, winning my… more …

How to Haiku

Friday night, live Blues music at Venice Café with my P.I.C. In the middle of the act the 72-year old doorman did an impromptu performance and sang/spoke haiku’s he had written about love, peace and life to the sounds of soulful music.  It was one of the most honest performances I’ve ever seen. It of course inspired me to want to a) start writing haiku’s b) make a book of haiku’s c)  perform them and d) make sure I see Blues music at least once a week. Luckily, my current P.I.C. is a talented, intuitive drummer so it seems there is a… more …

Adventures on my Bike

img202-150x150
I used to walk to work. It was only a mile walk from West End Lofts to our old office space in Maryland Plaza. Now I am about 4 miles from our new space in the Shock City Studio building so my bike from Big Shark will help me make the journey.  I was a little nervous about the ride but as soon as I started making my way through the different neighborhoods along the way I realized this was going to be a great way to get to know some of St. Louis’ neighborhoods with the most character and history.… more …

Bitter Sweet

Crepes; etc
The ALIVE office now shares an address with a charming local bakery. Needless to say; I’m in heaven. Today marks the first day in our new office space in Benton Park, in the same building that houses Shock City Studios and Bittersweet Bakery. And while the ALIVE crew is excited and energized in our new locale, the move has been somewhat bittersweet.

We called the Central West End our home for the last two years and loved/appreciated every second of it. We loved the fact that we could walk to the Cupcakery for a mid-day, Double chocolate pick-me-up or to… more …

My Almost Encounter

truebloodseasontworeview1-thumb-550x367-19363
I’m a preternatural junkie. It’s a pastime I’ve acquired over the last year, starting with the Twilight series last summer, followed by Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, which the hit HBO series, “Trueblood” is based on. While waiting for Harris’ next and 10th book to be released this May, I discovered another highly recommended series via Facebook; The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Novels by Laurell K. Hamilton. The series combines action, mystery, magic, humor, romance and….all-things preternatural, told through the voice of Anita Blake, a fierce and feisty heroine—and it’s all set in St. Louis.

To be honest, I had… more …

Noise

Mondays. I hate to sound outdated and quote Office Space but sometimes Mondays can bring out the worst in people. It is the day we all have to slip back into the reality of today’s workplace… Excel Hell and Email Jail. Today was a busy day in the office and I was getting nervous I was not going to find a Slice of Sanity to report on, but than I started craving a Chai Latte and went down to our new neighbor…Bittersweet Bakery and chatted it up with my new fav neighbor Samantha (who I would post a picture of… more …

When you gotta go, you gotta Go!

GO! St. Louis runners move down Olive St.! Photo courtesy of Antonio French. Thanks Antonio!
Yesterday was the Go! St. Louis Marathon, an event that draws thousands of walkers, runners, marathoners and half-marathoners every year (this year there were over 17,000!). I am proud to say I finished the half, my second!–and I have the pain to prove it! (Pain killers at the ALIVE office today, a Monday, was super fun!)

Granted, my race time was nowhere NEAR what it was last year (last year I was just under 2 hours, won’t say what it was this year ), but that’s because I didn’t really train much. But, I still had just as much fun… more …

White Rabbit

white-rabbit2-150x150
Friday was a tough day. I got into a fight with one of my best friends. She said I had been distant lately and I tried to justify my need for space and well it got pretty ugly. Before I went to a birthday party later that night I decided I needed something to get in the mood. So I went home and rocked out for a one person dance party. Nothing like shakin’ your booty to Noisettes Never Forget You, the classic Rent song that will be sure to make you smile Today for You Tomorrow for Me and… more …

Where They Went

Jenna Fischer, Jon Hamm, Ellie Kemper
Where did you go to high school?

As a non-St. Louis native, it took me some time to understand the intrigue of answers to this question. At first, my answer was always the simple “In Dallas,” thinking maybe someone in the Class of ’96 also now called St. Louis home.  Once I understood the real question in play (which is something like “What tax bracket are you in?” mixed with “What’s your religion?”), I had a little more fun, answering matter-of-factly with “Lakeview Centenniel, you?” acting as if maybe they really were recognizing me (despite the fact that I was sporting… more …
