With Labor Day behind us and summer sliding into fall (though you wouldn’t know it by the temps still pushing 85 on the regular), it’s the perfect time to celebrate the end of a brutally long, dry STL summer. My lawn, for one, was thrilled to get the first haircut it’s needed since May this week. In a happy coincidence, the last two weeks have also marked National Rum Day AND National Lemonade Day, and the kind folks at Sailor Jerry sent us a bottle of their tasty spiced rum to celebrate.
As co-chair of ALIVE’s Fun & Philanthropy Committee, I took it upon myself to gather together a few of my fellow co-workers who were working late at the office one evening to try it out. Using ingredients we had on hand—lemonade, iced tea and Sailor Jerry—we were able to mix up some quite delish end-of-summer cocktails. Recipes below!
Sailor Jerry Backyard Tea
2 parts Sailor Jerry spiced rum
2 parts lemonade
1 part ice tea
Pour into an ice-filled mixing glass, shake well, strain and pour.
Garnish with a lemon wedge.
Homeward Bound
2 parts Sailor Jerry
1 lemon wedge
4 parts fresh (still) lemonade
Add Sailor Jerry and fresh lemonade to an ice-filled highball and squeeze and drop lemon wedge.
My personal favorite was the Homeward Bound, but the Backyard Tea was also quite good—we probably could have brewed our tea a little stronger to better complement the caramel-vanilla flavor of the Sailor Jerry rum. It is also highly recommend that you enjoy your beverage outdoors on a porch or patio. We would have preferred to take our drinks up to the roof of our building to enjoy them with a chaser of fresh air, but it was pouring that day (not complaining!), so we settled for a conference room. All in a day’s work, I suppose—cheers, Sailor Jerry!
