DESIGN:
TOTALLY TUBULAR

Modern design legend Eileen Gray had an opulent viewpoint of the International Style aesthetic she helped pioneer. Most modernist designs of the 1920s and ’30s that followed the aesthetic focused on strong geometric forms, the use of industrial materials and the strict belief that form follows function. Although Gray respected and frequently implemented these tenants of modern design, including using tubular steel frames in much of her furniture, she sought to create furniture that was beautiful, functional and comfortable, not cold and industrial. Timeless in their appeal, Gray’s original pieces, such as the voluptuous Bibendum chair ($9,338-$13,390, shown) and the versatile Menton table ($5,145, shown), fetch millions at auction these days. If you can’t get your hands on an original—or can’t afford one—authentic replicas of Gray’s pieces are a more accessible option, available locally only at Centro Modern Furnishings, which carries the entire ClassiCon line, official producer of the Eileen Gray Collection.
